A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

However the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in positions just before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A bill presented on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
