At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
