“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
