In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
